Will the Nordic model survive EU financial legislation?

How have EU finance reforms affected the Nordic model in the financial sector? CBS and Nordic Financial Unions (NFU) invite you to a seminar to discuss the latest research on the Nordic implementation of EU financial rules.

The European Union’s response to the financial crisis of 2008 has fundamentally reshaped the regulatory landscape in the financial sector. This profound overhaul of financial services impacts several key elements of the Nordic model. As 40+ new legal acts for the financial sectors are implemented in the Nordic countries, key corporate governance and consumer protection elements will be affected. The question is – how and what is the real impact?

Finance employees play an essential part in the interplay between legislation and financial practice. They are the ones who meet with the customers and ideally create value for the sector. Employees are crucial to enforce consumer protection, and employee involvement contributes to sustainable wage setting and corporate governance. Given this – what effects will the implementation of EU financial rules have on the Nordic labour model and employees’ role for consumer protection? Will the level playing field of rules be preserved or will there be unfair competition in the future?

In a new and unique research report, these issues are reviewed and discussed extensively.

The results from this report will be discussed by a high-level panel including:

  • Eric Ducoulombier, Head of Unit FISMA/02, European Commission
  • Alexandra Horváthová, LL.M., S.J.D., Assistant Professor in Corporate Law
  • Michael Budolfsen, President, Nordic Financial Unions and UNI Europa Finance
  • Tom Kirchmaier, Professor, CBS/London School of Economics

This research project is a part of Nordic Finance and the Good Society, which has received support from, amongst others, Nordic Council of ministers and NFU.
