Europe Day: 75 Years of Peace and Solidarity
On 9 May, Europe celebrates a shared journey of peace and solidarity. This year's Europe Day holds special significance as it marks 75 years since the Schuman Declaration, the proposal that laid the groundwork for the European Union.

What began as a bold step toward lasting peace in the aftermath of the Second World War has evolved into one of the most ambitious cooperative projects in history: a union of countries working together to uphold shared values, promote prosperity, and protect democracy.
“The European Union is not just a political project. It is a commitment to democracy, peace, and shared responsibility. In times of uncertainty, that commitment is more important than ever,” expresses Carin Hallerström, NFU's General Secretary.
Defending Democracy Together
At Nordic Financial Unions (NFU), cross-border cooperation is not just a principle—it is part of our DNA. Founded over 100 years ago, NFU was built on the belief that we are stronger when we work together across national boundaries and stand up for shared values.
In an era marked by geopolitical uncertainty, climate urgency, and the rise of far-right movements threatening democratic values, the importance of European unity cannot be overstated. As recent global developments have shown, challenges do not stop at national borders, and neither should our solutions.
The EU is a vital platform for defending democracy, strengthening social justice, and building economies that put people first.
Looking Forward
As we celebrate 75 years of European unity, we reflect not only on our achievements but also on the possibilities that lie ahead. A fairer, more sustainable, and democratic Europe is within reach if we continue collaborating across borders.
