This Tuesday NFU’s Management Board and Secretariat visited the Icelandic company Carbfix, a role model for carbon removal techniques.

Carbfix uses a unique and self-developed method, which takes captured CO2 and turns it into stone, deep underground. Edda Aradóttir, CEO of Carbfix gave an inspiring presentation and explained which challenges carbon removal techniques are facing. Sadly, the gravest of these challenges are manmade, such as inadequate legal frameworks or lack of funding.

NFU’s Management Board discussed with Edda the latest legislative proposal of the European Green Deal on carbon removal certification. This mechanism will put in place an EU certification stamp that can provide guidance to investors. NFU has an uncompromising sustainable finance policy and thus offers its fullest support for this legislative initiative, which will help companies, such as Carbfix to obtain the urgently needed funding and support, which this sector requires in order to speed up its productivity. There can be no doubt that carbon removal processes are vital to reach climate goals of the Paris Agreement, by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and locking it away, which can slow and/or limit climate change.

NFU sends a big thank you to Edda Aradóttir, CEO Carbfix, for hosting us and for great discussions.
